While we are now on the roadmap out of lockdown, there remains a high degree of business uncertainty in the UK economy. So managing your own career path effectively through these last few weeks of the COVID restrictions is more important than ever.
Fortunately, many parts of the UK engineering sector have shown good resilience through the economic turmoil. This is primarily because “science” in all its many disciplines is playing a key role in helping us develop and deliver ways to beat the COVID-19 virus and future pandemics.
While it remains a difficult jobs market whether you are an experienced professional or a fresh graduate, there are some simple steps you can take to optimise and progress your career path, even now.
Step One: Think Ahead….
Even if you are not proactively job hunting, be prepared for a change in your circumstances. Keep your CV up to date – at Vector we are happy to help you do this, whether you are submitting your CV for a particular vacancy or simply want to register an interest with us.
Step Two: Keep in Contact …
Being proactive by industry networking and keeping in touch with consultants like us can work in your favour when it comes to getting the first bite of the dream job cherry! We have clients who give us a watching brief to look for people with a particular skill set. Sometimes, they will make room for the right person even if they are not actively recruiting so keep networking with us!
Step Three: Why You?!
It’s a crowded market out there, even for specialist roles, so why choose you? To make it onto the shortlist, you need to stand out and showcase your skills. Include on your CV a concise summary of a recent project where you can demonstrate significant added value or return on investment for the client. Be prepared to present that at an interview, demonstrating your thinking and development skills to stimulate conversation with your prospective employer that goes beyond “what’s the package worth?!”
